Four Pepperdine students were killed in a tragic crash on Tuesday night, October 17, 2023, on the Pacific Coast Highway. On Wednesday, school officials identified the students as Niamh Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams.
How did the Malibu accident happen?
Four students, Niamh Rolston, Asha Weir, Deslyn Williams, and Peyton Stewart, were walking along the Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu when an out-of-control BMW struck them on Tuesday night.
The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. in the 21600 block of Pacific Coast Highway near Carbon Canyon Road, about four miles north of Pepperdine’s beautiful coastal campus.
Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene. The four young women died due to their injuries in the accident. All four were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other injured were transferred to the hospital with unknown injuries.
The driver of BMW, who allegedly truck the four students, has been identified as 22-year-old Fraser Michael Bohm. According to the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, he was speeding. He was driving westbound on the highway in his dark-colored vehicle when he lost control, slammed into several parked cars, and crashed into a group of women walking in the area.
Witnesses in the area say that Bohm got out of the vehicle unharmed and was tackled to the ground by several people. He was arrested for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence, police said. An investigation is underway by LASD to determine where alcohol or drugs played a part in the accident. According to a local news report, he was released due to a lack of evidence.
Pepperdine officials identified the four women as four students: seniors Niamph Rolston, Peyton Stewart, Asha Weir, and Deslyn Williams.
Pepperdine President Jin Gash released a statement regarding the accident that said,
“To the students who loved, lived with, and were in community with the departed members of our Pepperdine family, my heart is broken with yours. I join you in your grief as we process this profound loss,” he continued, “In the days ahead, we will come together in meaningful ways to honor and celebrate the lives of the remarkable individuals lost to this unthinkable tragedy.”
The university officials said a prayer service has been scheduled for the members of the Pepperdine community for Thursday at 10:00 a.m. Further plans are in the works to hold a memorial service for each student.
