Jimmy Smagula studied at Lyndhurst High School, a four-year comprehensive public high school located in Lyndhurst, Bergen County. He graduated in 1993. He spent his childhood year growing up in Lyndhurst, New Jersey.
Growing up, Jimmy Smagula was very active in music, playing piano, trumpet, and clarinet.
When he was 15 years old, he auditioned for and was accepted into the acclaimed City Kids Repertory company in New York City. During his time there, he shared the stage with artists such as Whitney Houston, Gloria Estefan, and Demi Moore.
He was cast as a Convict in the musical comedy film The Producers in 2005. Based on the eponymous 2001 Broadway musical, the film stars Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Uma Thurman, Will Ferrell, Gary Beach, Roger Bart, and Jon Lovitz.
Jimmy Smagula played the role of a Balloon Vendor in the musical romantic drama film Step Up 3D in 2010.
